Sahir Ludhianvi : When every Verse was Magic – 10 Gems

Enough and more has been said about the depth, passion and finnesse of Sahir Ludhianvi and his poetry, and how he weaved magic into every word of his verses. Arguably the finest lyricist of hindi films ever, Sahir wrote for every mood, and every beat; and worked for a multitude of composers to create gems across decades. His collaboration with Sachin Dev Burman though stands out, especially the soulful melancholic songs they created together, most of which still echo as evergreen classics.

As the world gets ready to celebrate the centenary birth anniversary of Sahir Saab, here’s celebrating the terrific poet by remembering 10 of his best songs across films over years. There are of course multiple bunches of such tens that one can easily pick up from his amazing treasure of songs, but we restricted ourselves to ten and picked a max of one per film though it goes without saying that a Pyaasa or a Hum Dono or a Kabhi Kabhie would potentially feature all their songs in the Best of Sahir Ludhianvi list.

Too much to love. Too much to celebrate. Happy 100 years Sahir Ludhianvi! You are fondly remembered everyday through your ever relevant gems!

01. Jinhe naaz hain hind par woh kahaan hain | Pyaasa (1957)

Zara mulk ke rahbaron ko bulaao..
Yeh koonche ye galiyaan yeh manzhar dikhaao…
Jinhe naaz hai hind par unko laao…
Jinhe naaz hai hind par woh kahaan hain…
Kahaan hain kahaan hain kahaan hain…

02. Kabhi khud pe kabhi halaat pe rona aaya | Hum Dono (1961)

Kaun rota hain kisi aur ki khaatir aiye dost..
Sabko apni hi kisi baat pe rona aaya…

03. Main pal do pal ka shaayar hoon | Kabhi Kabhie (1976)

Kal aur aaenge naghmo ki khilati kaliyaan chunne waale…
Mujhse behetar kehane waale.. Tumse behetar sunne waale…
Kal koi mujhko yaad kare… Kyun koi mujhko yaad kare…
Masaruf zamaana mere liye kyun waqt apna barbaad kare…..

04. Woh subah kabhi to aayegi | Phir Subah Hogi (1958)

Woh subah kabhi to aayegi….

05. Mann re tu kaahe na dheer dhare | Chitralekha (1964)

Utna hi upkaar samajh koi jitna saath nibhaaye
Janam-maran ka mel hai sapna, yeh sapna bisara de
Koi na sang mare..
Mann re tu kaahe na dheer dhare….

06. Teri duniya me jeene se | House No. 44 (1955)

Koi to aisa ghar hota jahaan se pyaar mil jaata..
Wahi begaane cheherein hain.. Jahaan pahunchein, jidhar jaayein…
Teri duniya me jeene se to behetar hain ki marr jaayein…

07. Yeh raat yeh chandni phir kahaan | Jaal (1952)

Leharon ke hothhon pe dheema dheema raag hain..
Bheegi hawaayon mein thhandi thhandi aag hain…
Is haseen aag mein tu bhi jal ke dekh le…
Zindagi ke geet ki dhun badal ke dekh le…
Khulne de ab dhadkanon ki zubaan… Sun ja dil ki dastaan….

08. Dukhi mann mere sunn mera kehna | Funtoosh (1956)

Apne liye kab hain yeh mele, hum hain har ek mele mein akele…
Kya paayega us mein reh kar, jo duniya jeevan se khele…
Dukhi mann mere, sun mera kehena…
Jahaan nahin chaina, wahaan nahin rehena….

09. Aage bhi jaane na tu | Waqt (1965)

Is pal ke saaye mein apna thhikaana hain..
Is pal ke aage ki har shay fasaana hain…
Kal kisne dekha hain, kal kisne jaana hain…
Is pal se paayega, jo tujhko paana hain…
Jeene waale soch le…
Yahi waqt hain kar le poori aarzoo…

10. Kiska rasta dekhein aye dil aye saudayi | Joshila (1973)

Tujhe kya beeti huyi raaton se
Mujhe kya khoyi hui baaton se
Sej nahin, chita sahi.. jo bhi mile sona hoga…
Gayi jo dori chhuti haathon se
Lena kya chhute huye saathon se
Khushi jahaan maangi tune wahin mujhe rona hoga….
Na koi tera, na koi mera..
Phir kis ki yaad aayi…..
