Forget Me Not | Srijit Mukherji – This may be one of the better films Srijit Mukherji has made in recent times overall, but digs its own grave by using some of the highly objectionable ‘Srijit-ish’ tropes to add some gimmicky glitz and forced darkness to the story. It somehow survives due to some decent performances by Ali Fazal and Shweta Basu Prasad and an okayish overall screenplay. The final memory lane trip depiction is rather unclever and literary though, and takes away some more sheen from the film.
Behroopiya | Srijit Mukherji – Further dives deeper into Srijit’s gimmicky world, is much more incoherent, continues to use a flurry of wannabe and objectionable dialogues, and the nostalgic rooftop shot (Ray’s Protidwandi / Mukherji’s Autograph) or an interesting Dibyendu Bhattacharya cameo notwithstanding, even gets Kay Kay Menon to deliver one of his weakest performances of recent times. Just falls flat, this one.
Hungama Hain Kyon Barpa | Abhishek Chaubey – Is possibly the only salvaging short of the series, but even then only stays above average at its best. Somehow Manoj Bajpayee seems to be trying too hard as Musafir Ali, does better in the flashback, but the film overall is grounded by a terrific performance by Gajraj Rao, and good short cameos by Manoj Pahwa and Raghubir Yadav. Even then the metaphors are too in your face, and there’s very little left to the audience interpretation.
Spotlight | Vasan Bala – Is simply unwatchable. Period.
Most importantly, a film that markets itself so heavily in the name of the legendary filmmaker and story writer, does very little to preserve any essence or spirit of the world of Satyajit Ray. He would have been a heartbroken man today, seeing how the world is treating his legacy, that too in the birth centenary year. Sigh!!
The anthology series RAY has released on Netflix today.
